What Is the Crypto Market Health Index?
The Crypto Market Health Index (CMHI) is a composite 0-100 score that measures the fundamental health of the cryptocurrency ecosystem across five dimensions: momentum, breadth, liquidity, market structure, and innovation.
Unlike the popular Fear & Greed Index — which only measures sentiment — the CMHI measures actual ecosystem health using on-chain and market data. A score above 60 indicates a healthy market, 40-60 is neutral, and below 40 signals weakness.
How Is the CMHI Calculated?
Each component is scored 0-100, then weighted equally at 20% each:
Momentum (20%)
What percentage of the top 100 cryptocurrencies have positive 7-day returns, combined with the overall market cap momentum. When 75+ of the top 100 coins are green, momentum is strong.
Market Breadth (20%)
The advance-decline ratio of the top 200 coins, combined with correlation dispersion. Higher dispersion means coins are moving independently — a sign of healthy, differentiated markets rather than everything moving in lockstep.
Liquidity (20%)
The ratio of 24h trading volume to total market cap, combined with exchange trust scores. Low volume relative to market cap indicates an illiquid, fragile market.
Market Structure (20%)
Market concentration measured by the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) of the top 20 coins, plus the DEX/CEX volume ratio. Lower concentration and higher DEX activity indicate a healthier market structure.
Innovation (20%)
DeFi trading volume and active cryptocurrency count as proxies for ecosystem innovation and growth activity.
